As many of you know, I've been back living in my hometown of Orlando, Florida, for almost two years now. Both Orlando and Florida are misunderstood places, swampy enigmas that evade definition even by the people who call them home. Myself included.

Since returning, I've been trying to better see and understand Florida for what it really is. To do this, I'm creating a visual anthropology of sorts — a portrait of the people in paradise.

Mashnun is the first portrait in this series. We met recently after I'd reached out to take his portrait after coming across his work on Instagram. He's a writer, artist and one of those people who you know will do what they say they'll do. His work is raw, real and assured. Check out his Instagram for more.
